"Continuity and Change: Diaspora, Religion, Kinship, Food, Art and Architecture"

The Commission on the Middle East of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) in cooperation with the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of Jagiellonian University held a meeting and conference in Kraków (August 10-12, 2017) under general title: “Continuity and Change: Diaspora, Religion, Kinship, Food, Art and Architecture”. The event gathered 45 scholars representing 35 institutions and 17 countries. There were 8 panels, some divided into 2 sessions, and the network meeting of the members of the Commission, all accompanied by vigorous debates. The sessions were dedicated to such problems as religiosity and practicing religion, Middle Eastern diaspora in Europe and in Latin America, food and social organization, gender and religion, art and architecture, ethno-history of the Middle East and documentary film on women in the Middle East (the last session was accompanied with the display of two touching movies concerning the problem of honour killings among Palestinians in Israel and Israelis “Women of the Wall”). Due to large number of subjects discussed it was possible to examine an extensive range of methodologies and contemporary areas of research of Middle East anthropology. Thanks to engagement and efforts of the Head of the Commission Prof. Soheila Shahshahani (Shahid Beheshti University, Teheran) and the Commission’s Secretary Dr Marzieh Kaivanara, (University of Bristol) with our modest support, it was already the 3rd meeting of the Commission in Kraków, We are looking forward for effects of the meeting and our further cooperation.
